حرف تعریف معین definite article: the در زبان انگلیسی
حرف تعریف the ، معین خوانده میشود چون به شخص یا چیز خاصی در جمله اشاره میکند و میتواند قبل از اسم مفرد یا جمع ، قابل شمارش و غیر قابل شمارش قرار بگیرد.
ما حرف تعریف معین the را وقتی استفاده میکنیم که …
1) به شخص یا چیزی اشاره کنیم که میشناسیمش چون قبلا ذکر شده است.
I recognize that man. He’s the one who is doing great magic at the marketplace.
Over there is a cave. There are countless bats roosting in the cave.
2) به شخص یا چیزی اشاره کنیم که فقط یکی وجود دارد.
He is the boss of the company producing pencils.
The flood occurred only in the east coast of the country.

Peacocks have the most beautiful feathers.
The first runner to cross the finishing line was a skinny man.
This duckling is the only pet I have.
4) قبل از صفاتی که مثل اسم عمل میکنند.

They buried the dead wherever they found them.
5) قبل از مفردی که نشانگر و نماینده ی گروهی از مردم یا اشیا هم نوع خودش است.
A large and flightless bird, the dodo is now extinct.
The satellite has many uses, the most important of which I think is the transmission of information.
6) قبل از اسامی خاص.

رایج ترین این صفات اشاره ، this ، that ، these ، those هستند. This ، that قبل از اسم های مفرد و these ( شکل جمع this ) و these ( شکل جمع that ) قبل از اسم های جمع می آیند. همچنین برای مشخص کردن چیزهای نزدیک ( this) ، دور ( that ) ، تعداد چیزها (یک =this/that ، بیشتر از یک = these ،those ) ، یا دقیقا مشخص کردن شخص یا چیزی(this thing or this person = not that thing or that person) .determiner ها باید در شمار هم با اسم هم خوانی داشته باشد …..
